In August 2006, Thiess was confirmed as the mining contractor for the Prominent Hill Copper-Gold Project in South Australia. The contract involves setting up mine infrastructure including construction of the workshop, offices and fuel facilities; and undertaking mining activities on site for six years.

Thiess is currently mining 2.5 million bank cubic metres (BCM) a month. The fleet on site includes three Liebherr 966 excavators, 20 Caterpillar 793 dump trucks, and a range of ancillary equipment.

As part of its commitment to training and development of staff, Thiess is using an $800,000 truck simulator on site to develop the skills of plant operators. Built inside a transportable container, a computer simulates various scenarios from weather conditions and road surfaces to emergency situations, providing a safe environment for operator training.
